September is National Preparedness Month

9/1/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO logo National Preparedness Month Are You Ready September is National Preparedness Month - are you ready in the event of an emergency or disaster? We can help!

September is National Preparedness Month, an annual awareness event sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Disaster recovery specialist SERVPRO of Eau Claire says this is a great time for business owners to review their emergency preparedness and business continuity plans. SERVPRO points to startling statistics like this one to emphasize the importance of advance planning: according to FEMA, as many as 40 percent of businesses never reopen following a major flood disaster.

“Business owners who think they are prepared for an emergency because exits are clearly marked and fire or flood drills are parts of the regular routine really need to take another look at their preparations,” said Sue Steen, former SERVPRO Industries, Inc. chief executive officer. “A comprehensive emergency plan also contains critical information about the location of shut-off valves, fire suppression system controls, emergency contact numbers and more—information that can save emergency responders precious time and help contain damage and minimize injury.”

Because SERVPRO knows the time to create a disaster readiness plan is before you need it, SERVPRO has developed the Emergency READY Program to help business owners create an Emergency READY Profile (ERP) for their facility, at no charge. The business owner works with SERVPRO to gather and document information that will become critical if a disaster strikes. Once the ERP is created, business owners have access to their information 24/7 online and by using SERVPRO’s free smartphone app.

"When it comes to disaster readiness planning, it just makes sense to take advantage of the tools that are available, especially when they are offered at no charge," said Steen. "The first few minutes after a disaster strikes are often chaotic and very emotional. Minutes lost searching for shut-off valves, fire suppression system controls, or emergency contact numbers can mean further property loss, and worse. With the information in a business’s ERP, our experienced technicians can move into action effectively and immediately to help minimize damage and set the business on the road to recovery."

SERVPRO of Eau Claire professionals specialize in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it "Like it never even happened," for both commercial and residential customers.

What Causes Musty Odors in a Business?

8/26/2021 (Permalink)

Mold remediation icon SERVPRO of Eau Claire is your commercial mold remediation expert and available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Musty Odors are a Common Sign of Mold Growth. SERVPRO is an Eau Claire Commercial Mold Remediation Specialist Available 24/7.

Are odors a sign of low indoor air quality?

Musty odors in your Eau Claire business could be putting off customers and affecting staff. Usually, these odors result from a microbial growth issue that may be residing somewhere in the company building. Commonly, these issues occur due to a slow leak or damp spot, which could occur seasonally or as the direct result of an event. Mold does not just release odors but also microscopic spores. These spores often become airborne, where they can be inhaled or ingested by people using the space. If musty odors lead to the discovery of molds, you may need to restore indoor air quality to get your business back to its preloss condition.

What are the stages of mold growth?

- Spores land on damp or wet spots with enough organic matter and temperature to reproduce

- Hyphae grow from the spore onto, or into, surfaces

- Colonies produce additional spores which can spread further throughout the structure

What tools control indoor air quality?

It is typical for commercial mold remediation techniques used in your business to include air scrubbing. Cleaning air uses specialized equipment known as air-filtration devices. These can be placed throughout your company, drawing indoor air into a complex set of filters. These filters are known as high-efficiency particulate air filters (HEPA) and can pull microscopic mold spores out of an indoor environment. Usually, SERVPRO technicians create an exhausting duct in the business to remove contaminated air from the building altogether and replace it with clean air.

How should air-filtration devices be set up?

- Identify the affected area and enclose the system by shutting doors or windows

- Place an air-filtration device within the closed system

- Attach ducts for exhausting clean air and drawing out waste air

When your business shows signs of mold growth, contact SERVPRO of Eau Claire at 715-834-3473.

Mitigation & Restoration: What's the Difference?

8/17/2021 (Permalink)

Green Velo fans with SERVPRO logo We are here to help, day or night, 24/7

During a storm, your building may suffer some damage. When this happens, it can be good to know the difference between mitigation and restoration before hiring a flood cleanup company.

Understanding what mitigation and restoration are and how the processes pertain to the cleanup and repair of your building is important. Here are some differences between the two:

  1. Mitigation comes first: If your building has been harmed during a storm, one of the first things you should do is make sure it will not sustain any further damage. During mitigation, a flood cleanup company can provide services, such as removing water and boarding up windows, to keep water from spreading and increasing the problems with your building.
  2. Mitigation is usually finished quickly: With mitigation, the company does not usually make any repairs to your building. The job here is simply to prevent any further harm. Because of this, the mitigation process is done as quickly as possible so that restoration can begin, as the restoration company can only start repairing your building after mitigation has finished.
  3. Restoration can be lengthy: Repairs are done during the restoration process, so it can often take much longer than mitigation. Depending on the extent of damage during the storm, the restoration process can take months to complete.

Mitigation vs. Restoration: Which Do You Need?

If your building has suffered damage during a storm, you may be wondering which of these services you need. The answer is that you will likely need both. Having mitigation done before you begin repairs can save a lot of work and trouble in the long run. If you begin repairs without mitigation first, you may end up needing to do more fixes than you would have otherwise.

Mitigation and restoration are services that go well together since they each offer something that the other does not. When you are searching for a flood cleanup company you should call SERVPRO of Eau Claire, we offer both mitigation and restoration services. When you call us, you can feel confident that your property will be properly dried and restored.

Is Your Roof Leaking? 6 Signs to Look For

8/9/2021 (Permalink)

Water mark on ceiling A small roof leak can cause HUGE damage

Your Residential Roof May Leaking, Look For The Six Signs

Six Signs That Your Roof Is Leaking

As many plumbing experts know, leaking roofs can cause a plethora of unwanted problems such as water damage in your home. If these problems pop up, they can adversely affect your emotional and economic equilibrium. For this reason, it's good to be able to detect signs of a leaky roof early. In so doing, you can attain the professional assistance necessary to correct the problem and prevent structural damage to your property. With that idea in mind, consider whether you're experiencing any of the following six signs of a leaky roof:

 1. A Loss of Granules

The granules of your roof's shingles can grow loose as a result of aging and ongoing exposure due to water damage. When your shingles start to lose their granules, the roof is subjected to faster deterioration.

 2. Buckling Shingles

The shingles of your roof can start to buckle as a result of hot air coming from your attic. This hot air is an indication of poor ventilation and can lead to a build-up of moisture.

 3. Mold And Mildew Growth

If you notice possible mold growing inside your home or on the roof, the growth could have been caused by a leaky roof. This is the case because a leaky roof will create the excess water and moist environment that mold likes to thrive in.

 4. Roof Rot

Another sign of a leaky roof is roof rot. Roof rot is a term that refers to the process of your roof deteriorating rapidly. When this rapid deterioration transpires, your property can become increasingly susceptible to water damage because of potential leaks.

 5. Damaged Skylights

Damaged skylights can cause your rainwater to leak into the home and cause water damage.

 6. Damaged Flashing

When your flashing is improperly sealed or damaged against your roof, it can make it much simpler for excess water to start seeping into your home.

If you find that your property has been subjected to a leaky roof, you need to address and resolve the issue immediately. The best course of action is to contact a team of trained, IICRC-certified water damage remediation specialists. The team to trust is SERVPRO. All of our technicians will offer you the goal-oriented, detail-centered care necessary to restore your property with lightning speed

How Does an Ozone Generator Remove Odors?

8/4/2021 (Permalink)

Air freshener sprayed on couch area Do you have odors that you just can't get rid of? Maybe ozone is the solution!

You may be wondering, “What is an ozone generator?” An ozone generator is an industrial machine that produces ozone. So now you’re probably asking yourself, “What is ozone?” Many of us may remember learning about the ozone layer in school. The ozone layer is a layer in the Earth’s stratosphere that has trace amounts of ozone.

Up in the stratosphere, the ozone protects us by absorbing most of the ultraviolet radiation that reaches the Earth from the sun. While that might sound great, ozone in high concentrations is actually very toxic to humans.

What is Ozone?

Ozone is a colorless, highly reactive, toxic gas with powerful oxidizing properties. It is comprised of three atoms of oxygen rather than the two atoms of oxygen that we breathe. Ozone is naturally occurring as well as man-made. An ozone generator is a man-made way of creating ozone.

So why would we want to create ozone if it is toxic to humans? Because ozone is very good at removing particles in the air that cause odor. It is the ultimate air purifier which is why it is used by industrial clean up companies like SERVPRO of Eau Claire.

How Does Ozone Remove Odors?

Ozone removes the smell and odors by reacting and destroying the offensive smelling particulates, molecules, and bacteria. The ozone chemically reacts with them breaking them down into molecules and particulates and bacteria that don’t smell.

When Should Ozone Be Used?

An ozone generator is recommended for professional-use only, due to the dangers of high concentrations of ozone. Ozone generators and ozone are used to remove odors that seem impossible to remove. They can be used to remove the smell of cigarette smoke from a home that has been heavily smoked in.

They can also be used to remove the smoke odors from homes and businesses that have experienced a fire. Ozone is highly effective at removing odors due to the fact that it can penetrate anything that oxygen and smoke can penetrate. This can include fabric sofas and carpets in a home that has experienced smoke damage.

Due to the toxicity of the ozone gas, ozone generators are only used in spaces that are unoccupied and sealed. This means that if they are used in a home or business, they space usually needs to be evacuated while the ozone generator is in use. That is why it is highly recommended that you rely on professionals who are trained on how to safely operate an ozone generator.

Struggling to Get Rid of Strong Odors in Your Home or Business?

If you have strong odors that you have been battling for months and even years to get rid of, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Eau Claire to get rid of them. They’ll be able to determine the best actions to take including whether an ozone generator is needed.

The experts at SERVPRO of Eau Claire have helped remediate the odors from fires, flooding, mold damage and other sources for years. They have all the tools and experience to handle any disaster and any smell.

Keeping Your Home Safe While on Vacation

6/27/2021 (Permalink)

Water damaged carpet Keep your home safe from leaks and other dangers while on vacation

SAFETY TIPS

There is nothing more frightening than the thought of going on a summer vacation, returning home, and finding that your home has been robbed, vandalized or damaged.

Whether it’s a flooded basement, or even a faulty water heater, there is nothing more devastating than the thought of this unexpected property damage.

There are some ways to help minimize the risk. Here are a few ideas to help keep your home safe while you're away this summer:

TIPS

Don’t make it obvious you are out of town or on vacation

  • Try to arrange for a trusted neighbor to bring in your trash, mail and newspaper.
  • Suspend your mail and newspaper until you return home.

Automatic timers

  • Setting a couple of lights on automatic timers can help lend the impression that someone is home.
  • Leave a car parked in the driveway.

Security System

  • Consider setting up an in-home or exterior security system.  Some cameras operate on WIFI and are easily mounted in or outside the home.  These systems can send notifications to your phone when motion is detected and some even have a two-way speaker or alarm to deter a person trying to enter your space.

Leaks

  • Help avoid major water damage by simply turning off your water before you leave.
  • You may also drain your hot water heater to ensure no damage done from it.
  • Turn off your central air unit prior to leaving to prevent leaks (or have it professionally inspected if you are unable to shut it down).
  • Leave an extra key with a trusted neighbor—which will come in handy if, in the worst case scenario, there is a fire, flood, or some other issue that needs to be attended to before you return home.

Fire Prevention

  • Unplug any unnecessary devices and appliances to help prevent electrical fires.
  • Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors prior to leaving.
  • If safe to do so, turn off the gas to your home (consult a professional for more information)
  • Close your interior doors; the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute promotes closing doors to help prevent the spread of fire

Following these simple safety precautions could help you avoid a crisis or damage to your home.

If you need us we are here to help! SERVPRO of Eau Claire at (715) 834-3473.

Tornadoes in Wisconsin: What You Need to Know

6/17/2021 (Permalink)

Tornado Over Field Do you have an emergency plan for severe storms?

Tornadoes are known to cause widespread damage throughout the United States.  Wisconsin's peak tornado season runs from April through September with an average of 20 tornadoes per year. The majority of those tornadoes strike in the month of June.

But how much do we truly know about these destructive entities that tear through our homes and businesses?

Here are a couple of quick facts about tornadoes:

  • The average tornado travels Southwest to Northeast, but have been known to move in any direction.

  • Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3pm and 9pm, but can occur at any time.

  • Dr. T. Theodore Fujita devised the F0-F5 Scale for tornadoes in 1971.

  • In 2006 the National Weather Service unveiled the Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF Scale).

  • A tornado normally appears transparent until it picks dust and mud from the ground.

  • The USA averages around 1,200 tornadoes every year, more than any other country.

  • In the southern hemisphere tornadoes usually rotate in a clockwise direction. In the northern hemisphere tornadoes usually rotate in a counterclockwise direction.

Signs of Danger

  • Dark, green tinted sky

  • Large hail

  • Low-lying rotating cloud

  • Loud roar similar to a freight train

We encourage everyone to be weather aware. Have a family plan in the event of a tornado warning. Know where your safe areas are wherever you are.

For more information on tornadoes and thunderstorms and how to keep safe during these events, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services has provided a helpful guide that you can find here

Toilet Leaks: Small Leaks = Big Problems

6/7/2021 (Permalink)

Toilet with water on tile floor Even small toilet leaks can cause major damage to your home

It is not uncommon for toilets to malfunction and leak or have a wax ring fail and cause water damage, but it makes it no less frustrating when it happens to you, in your home.

A leak from a toilet may seem like a little issue;  but even a small amount of water can call a big mess. Many people may see just the water on the floor around the base of the toilet and think that just mopping up the mess will take care of the problem, but damage can be much more excessive than is visible.

SERVPRO of Eau Claire recently responded to water loss in an upstairs apartment that was the result of the toilet overflowing.  The water saturated the floors all the way through the ceiling below, causing thousands of dollars in damage.  Unfortunately for this property owner, the building was outfitted with lead paint and asbestos, both of which required professional remediation and abatement.  While the building is now safe for the residents, all this started with some water from a toilet.

SERVPRO of Eau Claire has been helping with water damages from toilet leaks and pipe breaks for many years and our trained and experienced crews of technicians are ready 24/7, 365 to respond and help you when water damage strikes.  We are always Here to Help(TM).

Carbon Monoxide - The Silent Killer

6/7/2021 (Permalink)

Carbon monoxide danger sign Carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless and can kill in minutes - know the warning signs to keep your family safe

You can't see or smell carbon monoxide, but, at high levels, it can kill a person in minutes. Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide, or CO, is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (like gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, and propane) burn incompletely.

According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) each year, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning. It is estimated another 20,000 visit the emergency room, and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning. All people and animals are at risk for CO poisoning, with some groups— including unborn babies, infants, and people with chronic heart disease, anemia, or respiratory problems— being more susceptible to the effects of carbon monoxide.

An excess of CO, leading to CO poisoning, can result from faulty furnaces or other heating appliances, portable generators, water heaters, clothes dryers, or idling cars left running in garages.

Taking some basic, precautionary steps can help eliminate the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Protect yourself by reviewing the following tips, provided by the United States Fire Administration:

  • Have fuel burning appliances, like oil and gas furnaces, gas or kerosene heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves inspected by a trained professional every year.
  • Open the damper for proper ventilation before using a fireplace. Never use your oven or stovetop to heat your home.
  • Make sure all fuel-burning vented equipment is vented to the outside to avoid CO poisoning. Keep the venting for exhaust clear and unblocked.
  • If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Never run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not blocked with snow, ice, or other materials.
  • Make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow and other debris.
  • Only use barbecue grills outside, away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings. Some grills can produce CO gas. Never use grills inside the home or the garage, even if the doors are open.
  • Use portable generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the home or business.

Fire Safety in the Office

5/20/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO company logo with flames Fire safety is our top priority

A fire is one of the most terrifying and devastating risks in the workplace which can compromise the safety of the workers as well as the public. If not killed immediately, it can cause serious injuries or even casualties and damages to the property. Hence, fire safety is really important in the workplace and should be a priority.

Everyone in the workplace should be aware of fire risks and be familiar with the necessary fire safety information and ways on how to prevent fires.  If you own or manage a business where others work, fire prevention measures are of the utmost importance. For everyone’s safety in the workplace, here are some fire safety tips you can follow.

COMMON FIRE HAZARDS IN AN OFFICE

What is fire safety? Apparently, this is a set of fire safety rules that aim to reduce the damage caused by fire. If you know how to prevent fire, the damages in the workplace and injuries can also be reduced. You should also know the common causes of fire and other important fire safety information.

ELECTRICAL

Most fires are caused by electrical problems such as damaged wiring, faulty equipment, and overloaded plug sockets. Faulty appliances may also cause a fire in the workplace so you should always check if your office equipment and appliances are working properly. Fixing electrical problems immediately should be a part of your workplace fire safety plan.

HEATING

Overheating can also be a cause of a fire. If you have heaters at the office, never leave them unattended or place them close to flammable objects as they can spark a fire. This is why everyone should know the importance of workplace fire safety.

COOKING

Some offices have their own kitchen so the workers can cook their own meals.  Nonetheless, unattended and unsafe use of cooking appliances can cause a fire. To prevent this, the employer should provide safety in workplace tips. Most workplace messages should be organized so everyone can follow them easily and consistently.

WHAT TO DO IF THERE’S A FIRE IN YOUR WORKPLACE

If there’s a fire in your workplace, it can be really terrifying. A lot of people tend to panic when there’s a fire, especially if they don’t know what to do. This is why everyone should know effective ways to prevent fire. During the fire, workers should follow all safety procedures in the workplace. Panicking should not be an option; instead, follow this fire safety precaution.

RAISE THE ALARM

If you’re the one who discovered the fire, you should alert everyone in the workplace and activate the fire alarm. If it doesn’t work, raise the alarm until everyone becomes aware of the fire. Some workers won’t know how to prevent fires so you should call the fire safe center right away. The key to effective fire hazard prevention is taking action and asking for it immediately. Nonetheless, you can use a fire extinguisher but don’t forget to adhere to the fire extinguisher regulations in the workplace.

EVACUATE

Once the fire alarm is on, Get out of the building immediately. Stay calm until you find your way to the fire exit. When you’re outside the building, let your immediate supervisors know that you are safe.

GET TO THE ASSEMBLY POINT

There should be an assembly point that you all agreed upon. That is where you should head to meet your co-workers and check if they are all safe. Wait until the firefighters come and get rid of the fire completely.

IF TRAPPED INSIDE

When your workplace is crowded or if you don’t keep your calm during a fire, there’s a chance of getting trapped inside the building. Also, there may be obstructions that won’t allow you to get out of the building. If you’re stuck in a room, you should find a way to prevent the smoke from coming inside. You may ask if there’s a window and keep calm while waiting for. If you are nervous, you will find it hard to think clearly so you should find ways on how to keep yourself relaxed. Breathe slowly to reduce your heart rate; this can you think more clearly while waiting for the firefighters.

While you’re trapped inside, think about the office fire safety tips and try to follow them. Fire and safety don’t always go hand-in-hand but if you can do any fire safety measure, you can save yourself from any possible danger.

After a Fire: What's Next?

Bathroom with white cabinets damaged by fire Bathroom damaged by fire

If you have had a fire, contact your insurance agent or company.  They will open a claim for you and start the process of documentation.  Once your claim has been opened, contact SERVPRO of Eau Claire to assess the damage and create a scope (estimate) for mitigation.  SERVPRO will work with your insurance adjuster and set a timeline for inventory, cleanup and repairs.

We will work with you throughout the process, from the initial walkthrough all the way to the move back and final inspection.

After any fire damage situation, safety should be your top priority:

  • Is it safe to enter the house?
  • Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards are some of the most prevalent concerns.
  • Only do activities that are safe for you to perform.
  • Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful!

What To Do After A Fire

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  • Keep hands clean so as not to further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
  • Clean and protect chrome with light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Wash houseplants on both sides of leaves.
  • Change HVAC filter.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

What NOT To Do After A Fire

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting your SERVPRO Franchise Professional.
  • Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat, or water without consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat, or water.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.
  • Don't send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

These are just a few basic guidelines.  Our trained and certified experts are here for you and Here to Help(TM).

Water Damage: SERVPRO is Here to Help!

4/30/2021 (Permalink)

Van with logo "Here in your community and here to help" We are always Here to Help

When your home has been damaged from flooding from severe storms, you need the help of a professional restoration company to get your property to its preloss state again. A flooded basement or other damage that exists after a flood or storm can lead to severe damage to your property.

You need immediate Flood damage mitigation for your home to protect the structure and your possessions inside. Without fast and efficient water removal, additional damage can occur. That is why at SERVPRO of Eau Claire, we do not waste any time getting to you when you reach out to us for help.

After we have extracted any standing water, we need to dry your structure by removing moisture from the air. SERVPRO technicians use two different systems for drying. An open drying system exchanges moist air from inside your structure with the drier outside air. Opening windows and using fans or air movers helps to exchange the air and ventilate your home.

For the best drying conditions, the outside air should have a high temperature and low relative humidity. The difference between the specific humidity of the inside air and outside air is also essential. Before we use an open system, we take measurements to figure out specific humidity for both outside and inside air.

A closed drying system closes off the area affected from the outside air and from areas in your home that are unaffected. We use dehumidification equipment to dehumidify the air inside the home. For a closed system to work, we have to control the indoor environment using dehumidifiers and air movers. It is easier to dry areas that are smaller, so we create a drying chamber by hanging plastic sheeting around affected areas or closing windows and doors.

If you have water damage in your home, don't wait to call for help.  We are Here to Help(TM) and work with your insurance company to get your home back to "Like it never even happened."

Time for Spring Cleaning - HVAC Duct Cleaning

4/5/2021 (Permalink)

Split image of a dirty air duct and a cleaned duct What is lurking in your air ducts?

Spring has finally arrived in the Chippewa Valley and traditionally, this is the time when homeowners begin to make a list of spring cleaning chores to prepare for warmer weather ahead. This year, SERVPRO of Eau Claire recommends that you add heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) duct maintenance on your to-do list, including a basic duct cleaning.

"At the very least, performing some simple maintenance on the ducts in your home will help your HVAC system work at maximum efficiency," said Sue Steen, former SERVPRO Industries, Inc. chief executive officer. "In some cases, it may highlight a problem you need to address."

Steen offers the following guidelines based on Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommendations for routine maintenance of the HVAC system in your home:

  1. Maintain filters.
Use the highest efficiency air filter recommended by the manufacturer of your HVAC system and change filters regularly. If your filters become clogged, change them more frequently. Also, be sure you do not have any missing filters and that air cannot bypass filters through gaps around the filter holder.
  2. Minimize dust.
Dust and vacuum your home regularly, using the highest efficiency filter bags your vacuum cleaner can take – preferably HEPA bags. If you undertake dusty construction or renovation work in your home, seal off supply and return registers and do not turn your HVAC system on until you have cleaned up the dust.
  3. Clean cooling coils and drain pans.
Cooling coils, which are designed to remove water from the air, can be a major source of moisture contamination that can lead to mold growth in your HVAC system. Make sure that the drain pans under these coils drain properly and check any nearby insulation for wet spots. If you see substantial standing water and/or debris in these pans, contact a qualified service professional immediately. If your system includes an in-duct humidifier, be sure to follow manufacturer operating instructions.

For some homeowners, this routine maintenance may uncover evidence of a larger problem, like mold growth, rodent or insect infestation, or ducts so clogged with dust and debris that particles are being released into the home through air supply registers.

"Restoration and remediation specialists like the technicians at SERVPRO can help you determine how serious the problem is," says Steen. "In many cases, routine maintenance is all that is required. But if the problem could pose a health threat to people living in the house, you need to call in the professionals. SERVPRO technicians are trained to use specialized cleaning and disposal techniques to remove any contaminants from your ducts safely and completely, without releasing them into your home."

Celebrate Safely this Holiday Season

Celebrate Safely this Holiday Season

In a year when large holiday gatherings may not be possible, a focus on family decorating traditions and more intimate celebrations may take on extra significance. It’s as important to keep safety top of mind with a small family gathering as it is with a large holiday party.  We all enjoy bringing the glow of the holiday season to our homes with Christmas trees or menorahs and candlelight, but these statistics from the U.S. Fire Administration show how easy it is for home decorating to turn into a home disaster.

• The top three days for home candle fires are Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve.

• More than half of the home decoration fires in December are started by candles.

• A heat source too close to the Christmas tree causes one in every four winter fires.

• On average, one of every 52 reported home Christmas tree fires resulted in death. In addition to exercising caution with candles and heat sources, it is important to follow manufacturers’ guidelines for holiday lighting.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in 44% of home Christmas tree fires. Though Christmas tree fires may not be common, they can be devastating to more than the house itself. They can destroy irreplaceable photos, mementos, and family heirlooms and even cost lives.

To help keep your holidays bright and your home and family safe, use common sense with candles and tree placement, and follow these important home decorating guidelines:

• Only use decorations that are flame-retardant or not flammable.

• Check holiday lights each year for frayed wires or excessive wear.

• Don’t link more than three strands of holiday lights.

In a year when so many of the things we take for granted have changed, we know people will still come together – in person or virtually – to celebrate family and holiday traditions. ‘Stay safe’ has become a common expression in the context of public health, but this holiday season, we urge all area home and business owners to think about ‘staying safe’ in their homes as they prepare for and enjoy the holiday season.

Fire in Chippewa Falls, WI

4/8/2020 (Permalink)

Fire in Chippewa Falls, WI Fire damage to home in Chippewa Falls, WI after car started on fire in the garage.

We were called to a fire in Chippewa Falls where the cause was very rare. Their car had blown up in the garage shortly after they had gotten home from work. No, cars do not blow up in real life like they do in movies. No one was hurt in this fire, thank goodness but there is extensive damage done to the house. While we don't know what exactly caused the car to start on fire, here are some things we do know regarding vehicle fires.

What are engine fires caused from?

According to Statista, there were 181,500 vehicle fires reported in 2018. While it is hard to find the cause of a vehicle fire, the most common causes are issues with the vehicle's electrical wiring system, fuel system, or even cigarettes left in the car. Get the systems checked at every service appointment to be sure everything is working correctly.

What are some warning signs?

  • Fuses that blow repeatedly
  • Oil or other fluid leaks under the vehicle (noticed after car has been parked)
  • Cracked or loose wiring, or wiring with exposed metal
  • Very loud sounds from the exhaust system
  • Rapid changes in fuel level, oil levels, or engine temperature
  • Broken or loose hoses

Call us @ 715-834-3473

If you see or smell smoke coming from your car pull over, get everyone at least 100 feet away from the vehicle, and call 911. Call your insurance agent to see what kind of coverage you have.

If you have a fire in your home, no matter the cause, SERVPRO of Eau Claire is ready, 24/7, 365 days a year.

Water Damage to a Home in Whitehall, WI

Water leak in basement in Whitehall, WI Fill line for toilet leaked into basement in Whitehall, WI while homeowner was gone.

A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure

Clean Ducts, Clean Lungs

Dirty Air Duct Does your Eau Claire or Chippewa Falls home need the air ducts cleaned?

Why clean your ducts?

Just because its cold and snowy in the Eau Claire area doesn't mean you can't get fresh air. Have you ever thought about getting your ducts cleaned? It's not something most people think of on a regular basis. There is nothing out there saying you should get your ducts cleaned once a year or every so often, but it doesn't hurt to keep it in the back of your mind if you have any of the following:

-pets
-occupants with allergies or asthma
-cigarette or cigar smoke
-water contamination or damage to the home or HVAC system
-home renovation or remodeling projects

Some occupants are more sensitive to these contaminants than others. Allergy and asthma sufferers, as well as young children and the elderly tend to be more susceptible to the types of poor indoor air quality that air duct cleaning can help address.

Through normal occupation in a home, we generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust, and chemicals. These contaminants are pulled into the HVAC system and re-circulated 5 to 7 times per day, on average. Over time, this re-circulation causes a build-up of contaminants in the duct work.

While dirty ducts don’t necessarily mean unhealthy air in your home, school or workplace, they may be contributing to larger health issues or harboring contaminants. Those of which, cause serious problems for people with respiratory health conditions, autoimmune disorders, or some allergies.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system. Although filters are used, the HVAC system still gets dirty through normal use.

When an HVAC system is clean, it doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the temperature you desire. As a result, less energy is used, leading to improved cost-effectiveness.

If you're thinking about getting your ducts cleaned or need a quote, give SERVPRO of Eau Claire a call at 715-834-3473.

Does your Eau Claire home have a mold problem?

1/20/2020 (Permalink)

mold on window sill In the Chippewa Valley, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Winter Storm Damage in the Eau Claire Area

1/2/2020 (Permalink)

How ice dams form Winter weather in the Chippewa Valley can cause serious damage to your home.

Everything you need to know about ice dams

With temperatures teetering on the edge of freezing in the Eau Claire area, ice dams are in their prime to form. Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls saw about 8 inches of snow last week. That is plenty to form an insulating layer of snow, creating the perfect storm for an ice dam. SERVPRO of Eau Claire wants you to know what to look for before you get water damage or growth in your home.

So what is an ice dam?

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof that prevents melting snow (water) from draining off of the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into the building or home and cause damage to ceilings, walls, insulation, and other areas. Most of the time, it is not caught right away and where there's water that's been sitting, there is usually growth or the start of it. Don't worry! SERVPRO of Eau Claire is always here to help!

What causes ice dams?

The easy answer is nonuniform roof temperatures. Let's break that down a little bit further though. There are three things that all come into play for ice dams to form

  1.  Heat loss from the building or home
  2.  A layer of dry snow on the roof which creates good insulation
  3.  Outside temperatures must be below freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit)

If any of the above are absent, ice dams cannot form.

When building heat coming through the roofs surfaces melts the snow on the roof, this causes meltwater to flow down the roof until it reaches a place that is below freezing (eaves that don't get heat from the building). Once the meltwater reaches the frozen surface, it accumulates over time creating a barrier of ice that the meltwater gets caught behind.

How can you prevent ice dams?

  • Know your snow load

Do you know how much weight your roof can hold? By removing the snow, it eliminates one of the ingredients necessary for an ice dam to form. You can use a push broom or a "roof rake" to remove the snow. In order for this to be effective ALL of the snow needs to be removed from the roof. If only part of the snow was removed from the roof, an ice dam will form where the snow was left.

*Please note that removing snow is only a temporary fix and can cause more damage to the roof. It's always a good idea to call in the professionals*

  • Make the ceiling airtight so no warm, moist air can flow from the house to the attic space

Natural roof ventilation can help maintain uniform roof temperatures. If heat transfer has been reduced substantially, then snow will build up on the room and cover the ventilation systems, reducing attic ventilation. Natural attic ventilation systems are necessary to dry and remove heat build up from the attic.

Eau Claire Smoke and Soot Cleanup

11/20/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Eau Claire will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

New SERVPRO First Responder Bowl to be played at Cotton Bowl Stadium

DALLAS – In a joint effort to honor the service and sacrifice of America’s First Responders, the annual college football bowl game played at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas has been renamed the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl.  Kickoff for the newly christened SERVPRO First Responder Bowl is set for December 26 at 12:30 p.m. CT (1:30 p.m. ET) and will be televised by ESPN.  The agreement between ESPN Events and SERVPRO was brokered by Denver-based Impression Sports & Entertainment.

"We are truly grateful for all first responders’ sacrifice and service,” said Brant Ringler, Executive Director of the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl. “It is a tremendous privilege to honor these brave men and women who protect our communities 24/7/365. As this game continues to grow, so do our ties with first responders. "We are proud to present the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl dedicated to honoring some of the hardest working men and women in our country" said Sue Steen, CEO of SERVPRO Industries, Inc. "We recognize the dedication and selfless acts of our First Responders and are honored to help highlight and celebrate the commitment of these everyday heroes."

The 2018 SERVPRO First Responder Bowl is the ninth edition of the bowl game, formerly known as the Heart of Dallas Bowl, and part of the 89-year history of games being played at Cotton Bowl Stadium on the grounds of Dallas’ Fair Park, which features 227 acres of museums, attractions, history, art and performances located in the heart of the ninth largest city in the United States.

First responders to be honored include police officers, firefighters, EMS workers, correctional officers, search and rescue, dispatchers, security guards, federal agents, border patrol agents and military personnel who have specialized training and are the first to arrive and provide assistance at the scene of an emergency.

“This is an exciting change, and we are humbled by the fact that an actual bowl game has been named exclusively for the first responders of this country,” Dallas Fire-Rescue Fire Chief David Coatney said.

“We are truly honored to have a bowl game here in Dallas named after the hard working men and women serving and protecting communities across this country.  It always feels great to be recognized, and I know our officers and firefighters are touched by this overwhelming show of support, “said Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall.

Cleaning your ductwork can reduce allergens and pet dander, eliminate offensive odors, and improve operating conditions and efficiency.

You can use SERVPRO of Eau Claire as an informed resource. Our trained and certified professionals can inspect a home or commercial building for damage and whether moisture has penetrated materials or is allowing mold growth.

And Then The Rains Came!

5/23/2018 (Permalink)

According to the National Weather Service (NOAA), approximately seventy-five percent of all Presidential disaster declarations are associated with flooding. NOAA lists the most common flood hazards in the United States as:

  • Flash Flooding
  • River Flooding
  • Storm Surge and Coastal Inundation from Tropical and Non-Tropical Systems
  • Burn Scars/Debris Flows(Caused by Wildfires)
  • Ice/Debris Jams
  • Snowmelt
  • Dry Wash (Caused by heavy rainfall in dry areas)
  • Dam Breaks/Levee Failure

Just because you haven't experienced a flood doesn't mean you won't! In fact, 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities. On average more than $3.5 billion in annual losses in the United States and commercial flood claims average more than $75,000 (NFIP)

The Weather Outside Is Frightful!

4/16/2018 (Permalink)

If you weren't lucky enough to be in a warm and tropical climate over the past weekend, you saw Mother Nature doing her best to remind everyone, just who says it is officially spring! In some Wisconsin towns, as much as 30" of snow was dumped on everyone. The Dairy state seen everything from, rain, sleet, lightning and thunder, high winds, and most definitely saw plenty of snow! With the snow, and rain comes many issues that can effect your home and business.

Remember to clear snow away from your vents, in order to keep from blocking them and causing deadly gases from building up in your home. Clear off your roof to help lessen the wait that heavy snow and ice can cause. Salt your steps and sidewalks to help prevent slips and falls. When running your vehicles to warm up, remember to open the garage door for proper ventilation.

Although lightning can happen at anytime, the chances are rare with winter like weather. No matter what time of the year lightning happens, here's some safety tips.

  • HAve a lightning safety plan, and cancel or postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms are expected.
  • If you do get caught outside, avoid high grounds, open spaces, and all metal objects including electric wires, fences, etc. Seek shelter in a substantial building or a fully enclosed metal vehicle.
  • If you are indoors, stay away from doors and windows. Do not use the telephone. Consider unplugging computers, power tools, and tv sets. Lightning may strike exterior electric/phone lines, inducing shocks to inside equipement.

Source for lightning tips are from the National Weather Service.

(5 star review)

by Joel L. - 3/22/2018

Early on Feb 27, 2018, a city sewer main backed up into our basement. We were one of over 50 affected homes, and got by "lucky" with only 7 inches of sewage in our finished basement. SERVPRO of EC was on site by 8 am and had the bulk of the cleanup done that day. Abbi & Sandy did a great job, and maintained a very professional manor throughout the day, eventhough they had more homes to get to after ours that day. Eve in the office kept us informed over the next week and the team completed the last few touch ups over the next week. I will not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Eau Claire in the future, they did a great job!. Thank you Abbi, Sandy & Eve.

Severe Weather Safety

3/5/2018 (Permalink)

Severe weather happens any time, anywhere. Every single year the US averages 10,000 severe thunderstorms, 5,000 floods or flash floods, 1,300 tornadoes, and 2 land falling deadly hurricanes.

about 98% of all providentially declared disasters are weather related, leading to approximately 650 deaths per year and nearly $15 billion in damage. There are a few steps you can take to better prepare yourself for disasters and possibly save your life or the lives of others.

  • Know Your Risks. First step to being weather ready is to understandthe type of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather can impact you, your business, and your family. Check the forecast regularly, get a NOAA Weather Radio, and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts. There are many forms of severe weather and your shelter plans should include all types of local hazards.
  • Take Action. Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communications plan for your home and business. Put together or purchase an emergency kit. Keep important papers and valuables in a safe place.

Be an Example. Once you've taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with friends and family, coworkers, on your social media accounts. Your time and effort to be prepared will be an inspiration to others and encourage them to do the same.

Contact SERVPRO of Eau Claire for more readiness tips and tools, including SERVPRO's Emergency Ready Profile (ERP). Having an ERP in place for you or your facility can help minimize business interruption in the event of a disaster. SERVPRO of Eau Claire will help you be "Ready for whatever happens!"

2/19/2018 (Permalink)

Building an emergency kit shouldn't be that hard right? It seems everyone recommends home and business owners have an emergency kit, but when it comes to putting one together, there is a lack of resources to help put it together. Ready.gov suggests you have enough supplies for three days minimum. Below is a list of item s you may want to include in your kit.

  • 3 day supply of non-perishable foods
  • 1 gallon of water per person per day
  • First-aid kit
  • Any prescription medication taken, enough for at least 3 days
  • Sleeping bags and/or blankets
  • Hygiene products
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Flashlights
  • Extra Batteries
  • Cell phone charger
  • Change of Clothes
  • Matches in a waterproof container
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • If you have pets, have pet supplies

Clean ducts = Healthy lives.

2/13/2018 (Permalink)

Sweeping away years of dust and dirt can help reduce potential for damage and health risks. Since the ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality, proper maintenance, inspections, and cleaning of the ductwork should be high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been running for some time without any attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants like mold and irritating dust throughout your home or office.

A routine part of SERVPRO of Eau Claire professional's service is inspecting the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit. Better known as the HVAC. Keeping the HVAC system and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may save you money in the long run.

If you or others notice an odor, a lot of dust on items, even after the filter has been changed, have or have had mold in your home, or have seasonal allergies, you may want to consider contacting SERVPRO of Eau Claire to clean your HVAC.

Hoarding in the Chippewa Valley

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

Hoarding, what is it? What causes it? What can you do to help a loved one who you believe is a hoarder? What are the dangers? All questions that SERVPRO of Eau Claire Professionals are trained to answer, properly care for, and clean.

Did you know that Eau Claire County and SERVPRO of Eau Claire are leading Wisconsin in the fight to help those who hoard, and to bring awareness to the issue? The Eau Claire County Hoarding Task Force, with the guidance of the Hoarding Project, do just that. The task force is made up of a number of different government agencies as well as private businesses and community members, joining forces to help better our community.

It started when the Eau Claire Health Department and city police and fire departments got together to discuss what should be done with a couple cases that they three departments were working on. It was determined that the issues of hoarding go much deeper than a messy home, or someone that just collects a bunch of items. The city teamed up with several different entities and leaned upon several businesses and community members to form the most well rounded and knowledgeable group, equipped to tackle this issue.

The Eau Claire Hoarding Task Force now includes:

Catholic Charities

City of Eau Claire Police Department

Community Members

Consult an Organizer

Eau Claire School District

Eau Claire City/County Health Department

Eau Claire Department of Human Services

Eau Claire Fire and Rescue

HSHS Behavioral Health

Taking Mold Precautions

1/24/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Eau Claire Professionals handle water damages every single day and know prompt action is required to prevent mold growth. Mold is more likely to spread when an environment has been subject to moisture for a long period of time. If your property has sustained a recent water damage, it is vital to remove excess water and dry the structure as soon as possible. If there is an ongoing moisture problem in the building, it is important to be on the lookout for:

  • The presence of visible mold.
  • Strong musty odors which may indicate mold is present.
  • Any evidence of past moisture problems that might have caused undetected mold growth.
  • Excessive humidity.

These conditions may require the expertise of a qualified Indoor Air Quality/ Environmental Professional to inspect the building for mold growth and water damage problems.

If you think you have a mold issue, call 715-834-3473. A SERVPRO of Eau Claire Professional trained in mold remediation will examine the structure for any visible signs of mold. In the event mold is found, you will be asked to sign a work authorization form prior to any mold cleanup or related work being performed. The technician may also recommend you leave the affected area while the mold cleanup and associated containment process is being safely completed.

Extreme Cold

1/16/2018 (Permalink)

According to the National Weather Service, $2.84 million dollars of property damage was caused by the extreme cold in 2015. Even scarier? Fifty-three people died and three were injured because of the extreme cold during 2015.

There are two things to be mindful of during the extreme cold, Frostbite and Hypothermia. Frostbite is caused when your skin is exposed to extremely cold temperatures. Physical conditions to be aware of are, white or grayish-yellow skin, skin that feels unusually firm, or waxy numbness. Hypothermia is when your body temperature drops to an abnormally low temperature, caused from long exposure to cold weather. Signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. If someone's body temp falls below 95 degrees (F), it's is important to seek immediate medical attention.

Seeing how this winter has been arctic blast of weather for weeks on end, it is vital you take some time and know the weather whenever you leave your home.

Does your home have a mold problem?

12/15/2017 (Permalink)

Let the experts take care of you!

Today SERVPRO of Eau Claire's Marketing Representative met with Chief Executive Officer Wesley Escondo, and Associate Director of Fund Development Teri-Gene Conlin and presented a $1,000 check to the organization.

We look forward to continuing our partnership and support with Big Brothers Big Sisters for many years to come.

Choosing the right restoration company

How To Choose Water Damage Restoration Services

When a storm leaves a home flooded, or a burst pipe causes serious issues in the house, getting water damage restoration services from a respected company should be considered a top priority. Unfortunately, this industry is not regulated, and there are people out there who pose as professionals or overstate their qualifications. Therefore, homeowners should be mindful of who they hire, as an untrained technician may do more harm than good or delay repairs, resulting in a higher degree of destruction. Before selecting a company to handle the job, keep in mind these points of emphasis:

  • Only choose certified professionals to perform water damage restoration services. Even though the industry is not regulated, technicians who have received certification have made the effort to get the best training possible, proving that they take their job seriously. Certification through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is a sign that a professional has received the most up to date training and is knowledgeable in the latest techniques and technologies employed during repairs. The IICRC operates a Certified Firm registrant-only database on its site, making it easy to find a local, certified professional without trouble.
  • Do not select a technician based only on the price or an insurance company’s recommendation. When possible, speak to neighbors or friends who have had to hire a technician recently and try to get a recommendation from them. Insurance companies often select a restoration company based on price, and unusually low pricing suggests the company does not use modern drying or repair methods.
  • Choose a company that offers a range of water damage restoration services. The easiest way to determine the expertise of a firm is to see if they provide a full range of options for homeowners. Mold remediation, for example, is often needed given how quickly mold can set in. This is a standard field of knowledge that advanced technicians should possess. If a company doesn’t offer mold remediation, it may not be prepared for all job settings.
  • A company that is available 24/7 is a good sign. Stay away from any firms that are reluctant to start right away. In many cases modern equipment can enable near-complete drying in as little as 36 hours,  although many situations require longer. Also, a homeowner should not have to wait before repairs begin. Every minute counts when there is standing water present, and reputable professionals understand this. If a technician insists on waiting to begin the  remediation portion of the loss, they probably cannot be trusted to see the job through in a reasonable timeframe.

Using these guidelines, a homeowner should be able to find a technician that can be trusted and is equipped to do the job the right way. A storm or other disaster is hard enough to deal with, and a remediation firm should do everything in its power to make this difficult process easier.

Soda Blasting for Farm & Home after fire damage

6/20/2017 (Permalink)

Soda Blasting is very much like Sand Blasting. It works in conjunction with an air compressor to clean dirty parts and surfaces. But instead of using sand as the cleaning abrasive, a soda blaster shoots out sodium bicarbonate, which is commonly known as baking soda (though what's used in blasters is composed of larger particles than those found in standard household baking soda).

The advantage of using baking soda, as opposed to sand, crushed walnut shells, coal slag, or any other abrasive, is that it's environmentally safe, less aggressive, relatively affordable, and easily rinsed away with water. In fact, the first large-scale industrial use of soda blasting occurred during the 1986 centennial restoration of the Statue of Liberty. It was the only safe and effective way to remove coal tar, paint, and corrosion from the statue's soft copper skin.

It can be used on wood to brick to remove soot & smell from smoke damage and fire charring. Grain Elevators / Grain Bins in need of cleaning before use or after a fire can benefit from the quick turn around time and peace of mind of using this process.

SERVPRO of Eau Claire keeps stock on hand and can respond quickly (24/7 emergency service) to anywhere. Commercial, Agricultural, Industrial & Residential.
